Christian J. Malpica-Nieves

My name is Christian J. Malpica-Nieves. I graduated in 2021 and obtained a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology at Universidad Central del Caribe – School of Medicine (UCC). This doctoral degree has provided me with the knowledge to educate and mentor undergraduate, graduate, chiropractic and medical students in the advanced biology field doing research and writing grants. Right after my graduation, I was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship. Currently, I am a Postdoc at UCC. I work with HIV-related diseases and study the effect of organic molecules on astrocytic receptors and syncytium. 

I have advanced knowledge in the following topics:

• Immunology
• Molecular Biology (Oncology drugs mechanism and metabolism with α-Difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) and Polyamine transport inhibitor (PTI) in primary cultured cells. 
• Biochemistry (advanced knowledge of polyamines and their metabolism) 
• Neuroscience and Neurological Disorders
• Human Immunodeficiency Virus and HIV associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND)

I have direct expertise in the comprehension of research and clinical trials research articles. I also have expertise in primary cultured astrocytes, confocal microscopy (immunofluorescence) western blot, electrophysiology, RT-qPCR and more (see CV attached). With my scientific knowledge, skills and scientific literature reading capabilities, I can assure you I will exceed expectations for this position.

2021 to Present : POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AT UNIVERSIDAD CENTRAL DEL CARIBE, BAYAMÓN PR

Responsibilities (full time job): Research and development of new scientific methodologies to help understand the relationship of HIV and antioxidant molecules found in the human body. Mentoring (training and education) of graduate and undergraduate students. Interviewing medical students for admission. Apply highly competitive grants and scientific writing. 

2015-2021: GRADUATE STUDENT ENROLLED IN RESEARCH TRAINING INITIATIVE FOR STUDENT ENHANCEMENT (RISE) & R15 GRANT SUPPLEMENTATION

Responsibilities: maintain a work and study balance. Participate in the Molecular Biology Summer Academy giving seminar and hands on experience in research to undergraduate students. Participate in all RISE related workshops. Submit a F31 grant proposal. Take courses related to teaching and education at a doctoral level.

Responsibilities: Preparation of lectures and education of undergraduate students in Responsible conduct of Research.

2014-2015: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN AND MANUFACTUING, LABORATORIO CALIDAD DE LECHE Y QUESOS VACA NEGRA, HATILLO PR

• Laboratorio Diagnóstico y Control de Mastitis (“Diagnostic Laboratory of Milk and Mastitis Control”). Responsibilities: Count bacteria colonies with Standard Plate Count Technique, count of somatic cells with the Wisconsin Mastitis Test, cultures for the identification of Mycoplasma ssp, search for antibiotic residue in cow milk samples and milk tanks. Elaboration of cultures like: SPC and Blood Agar. 
• Cheese making production, Quesos Vaca Negra Inc. (Black Cow Cheese Inc). Responsibilities: Cheese and yogurt making. Take the pH and temperature of cheese, milk and yogurt during the process of coagulation. Eliminate the excess of mites present during the aging of the cheese and cut and pack the cheese for distribution.
